The Process

A greyed out old deck that is partially sanded.

Step1: Sanding

We kick off our process with precision sanding, a crucial step that prepares the wood for staining. This initial sanding opens up the pores of the wood, allowing the stain to penetrate deeply and evenly. Here's why it's so important:

  • Achieve a Beautiful, Even Finish: We expertly remove the top layers of the wood to ensure a flawless, consistent look.

  • Complete Removal of Previous Finishes: Thick stains, sealants, paints, and weathered materials are completely eradicated. With transparent or translucent stains, even the tiniest imperfections show through, so we leave no room for compromise.

  • Essential for New Decks: Even brand-new deck installs need sanding to remove the waxy mill sheen that hinders proper stain penetration and can make the colour appear lighter.

  • **NOTE- if the new build has had time to weather, sanding might not be necessary.

Step 2: Staining

Now, you have the power to choose the final look you desire. Our range of stunning stain colors allows you to customize your wood's appearance. We take immense pride in our stain application:

  • Guaranteed Non-Peeling Finish: We stand by the durability of our stain. While we can apply any stain of your choice, we highly recommend and provide a warranty for the use of our own. Our thin, oil-based, transparent stain penetrates deeply, offering water resistance and preventing peeling.

  • Meticulous Application: Our skilled team hand brushes the stain into every nook and cranny, ensuring there's no streaking or dripping, resulting in a flawless, even finish.

  • Note: Wood naturally varies in color, so individual planks may display some differences.

Step 3: Maintaining

After investing your time and money into the prep sanding and stain finishing, it's essential to ensure your wood stays in its best condition for years. Our maintenance guidelines are designed to keep your wood looking its best:

  • Long-Lasting Results: True penetrating oil stains never peel; however they do fade over time. The good news is that you can reapply as often as you like, provided proper prep sanding was done and maintenance re-coats haven't been neglected for too long.

  • Recommended Recoating Schedule: For horizontal surfaces like decks and porches, we suggest a recoat every 1-2 years. For vertical structures such as fences and pergolas, a recoat every 3-4 years is ideal. Keep in mind that recoat frequency may vary based on exposure to weather, sun, climate, usage, and more.

  • Easy Maintenance: You won't need to sand again, but you may need to lightly wash and/or brighten your wood before re-coating, ensuring your wood stays vibrant and protected.
